Who knows more about you...The US, or China?

In light of last week's 4 million strong data breach, described as one of the largest thefts of government data ever seen, TK Keanini, CTO, Lancope writes:

"Last Thursday night, U.S. officials said that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) had suffered a breach. Data from four million current and former federal employees, across numerous government agencies, may have been stolen by Chinese hackers. It does not take a security expert to see a pattern taking place here. Most of the attacks allegedly from China over the past few years have gone after the personal information of US citizens, and there is no sign that this trend will diminish. It is fair to assume at this point in the game, China may have more accurate information on US citizens than the US itself.

World-first, data-driven Internet of Things report released

Cloud security company OpenDNS has released a world-first data-driven Internet of Things report. Highlights include:

Consumer devices such as Dropcam Internet video cameras, Fitbit wearable fitness devices, Western Digital “My Cloud” storage devices, various connected medical devices, and Samsung Smart TVs continuously beacon out to servers in the US, Asia, and Europe–even when not in use.

IoT devices are actively penetrating some of the world’s most regulated industries including healthcare, energy infrastructure, government, financial services, and retail.

Though traditionally thought of as local storage devices, Western Digital cloud-enabled hard drives are now some of the most prevalent IoT endpoints observed. Having been ushered into highly-regulated enterprise environments, these devices are actively transferring data to insecure cloud servers.

The report also provides security professionals with recommendations for mitigating IoT-related risks found in their own networks.

New study reveals that social media security is a low priority for organisations and employees are unaware of the risks

A new study from ESET UK has revealed that 80 percent of IT professionals believe social media is an easy way for hackers to gain access to corporate networks because it is often neglected in terms of security, and furthermore 36 percent even admit that their company could be breached by a hacker through one of their employees’ social media access at work.

MoD invests £80million in new helicopter training equipment

The Ministry of Defence is investing £80 million in new world-class equipment to help train the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy helicopter pilots and rear crews of the future.

A £51 million contract with Lockheed Martin UK will support Chinook Mk 6 training and a £29 million contract has been awarded to AgustaWestland to provide Merlin Mk 4/4a aircrew Synthetic Training Devices. The simulators will be based at military bases in Somerset and Hampshire with the two contracts providing around 130 jobs, including for the construction of a new schoolhouse.
