Absolute Software extends secure asset tracking, data protection and geolocation capabilities to the popular Android platform
Innovations come with ease for Absolute Corporation as a person breathes air. On May 3, the leading provider of firmware-based endpoint security and management solutions will push to the market, its latest innovation - the Computrace Mobile for the Android devices.
Vigilance learnt that Computrace Mobile for the Android platform will provide organizations with:
- Reduced operational costs associated with managing mobile devices by leveraging the Computrace platform’s integrated Customer Center reporting for hardware, software and user information.
- An additional layer of data protection and increased compliance with government data breach laws through remote Data Delete capabilities.
- The ability to geolocate a device and display it on an internet map including current and historical locations*.
“With a growing number of non-traditional devices accessing our corporate network, the need to be able to track and secure these devices really is mission critical,” said Karl Yeager, Tier 2 IT Technical Support, Delray Plants. According to Yeager with Computrace Mobile, they are able to know where these devices are and, more importantly, take the necessary action if a device is at risk.
Lending credence to Yeager’s claim Mr Stephen Midgley Vice President, global marketing at Absolute Software said: “Today’s organizations are challenged with managing multiple devices across multiple platforms. With the risk of sensitive data being compromised a constant threat; IT departments require a solution that provides them with complete visibility into all of their devices, regardless of whether they are on or off the network.”
Midgley added: “As IT departments add non-Windows devices into their deployment, they need to ensure they take a layered approach to security by knowing where these devices are and being able to react when such devices are at risk. Computrace Mobile delivers such a solution to organizations.”
Computrace Mobile is said to be supported on the following platforms: Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.1, 6.2, and 6.5 handheld devices; Symbian – S60 Third Edition and later releases; and BlackBerry Mobile Versions 4.5 and later. Absolute Manage Mobile Device Management allows organizations to manage the Apple iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch in their deployment.
How Computrace Technology Works
Vigilance also learnt that Computrace products are powered by the Absolute Software patented Computrace persistence technology. When embedded in the firmware of computers from leading computer manufacturers, Computrace can survive operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging, helping to ensure that the service is there when it’s needed most.
The Computrace Agent is virtually undetectable and calls home to the Absolute Monitoring Center with IT asset management information including the physical location of each device. If a computer is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team works on behalf of the customer to gather evidence from the computer to identify the thief’s location, and then works with local police to get the computer back. Customers can also remotely delete data, freeze a device, and remotely retrieve files to secure the device (and the data it contains) – a reliable contingency in case other data protection solutions fail.
* Geolocation is only performed with the prior consent of the device owner on corporate liable devices.
