Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently suffered a major outage causing chaos for millions of users across the globe. Reports claim that the AWS facility in Virginia, United States suffered a massive technical issue, which forced some of the world’s top websites down including RunKeeper, Imgur, Giphy and SoundCloud. Commenting on this news below is Stephen Gates, Chief Research Intelligence Analyst at NSFOCUS IB:
“Amazon’s outage yesterday could have been caused by a host of different issues. Cable cuts, power outages, software bugs, and equipment failures obviously can cause outages; but not usually at this scale. The terms used by Amazon “high error rates” to describe the outage could have meant many different things. “High” usually means it’s outside of the norm. “Errors” is often related to broken traffic or malfunctioning processes. “Rates” suggest that something is being repeated. Although highly speculative at this point, one cannot dismiss the possibility of hackers contributing to the outage. If hackers did contribute, most likely that info will never become public.”
