The Security Industry Authority recently carried out a successful two-day operation in the capital, which targeted door supervisors, security guards, CCTV operators and close protection operatives in three London boroughs (Kensington and Chelsea, Tower Hamlets, and Greenwich).
Operation Oklahoma was conducted by SIA investigators and saw teams deployed to 74 security sites including: pubs, clubs, concert venues, offices, media centres, museums, department stores, supermarkets, high street and designer shops.
During the operation, 213 operatives were inspected and 208 individuals held valid SIA licences. Five unlicensed operatives were found to be working illegally and investigators are conducting further enquiries. 24 warnings were issued to security staff for breaches of SIA licence conditions - failing to display their licence whilst on duty and failing to notify the SIA of a change of address.
Director of Compliance and Enforcement Dave Humphries said:
"As a responsible regulator, it is important for us to undertake random inspections like this, to test our methodology and ensure that we are targeting the right sectors.
"Whilst 98% of those inspected held valid SIA licences, a high level of compliance, it is still disappointing that non-compliance was found.
"If individuals are carrying out licensable activity, they must hold a valid SIA licence and adhere to licence conditions. Any breach of the law or licence conditions is a criminal offence and could lead to security staff having their SIA licences revoked."
