This is an observation in the course of my security business over the years in which people love and appreciate security matters and procedures only when it is convenient for them;by this I mean only when it favours and suits their needs and purposes.
This one-sided behavioural trend to security is seen repeatedly in many corporate organisations where, the clients only love the benefits of the security service without putting any effort on their own to complement or sustain the security procedures put in place, which actually is for the benefit of all.
For example, the clients will love visitors, contractors, vendors, etc, entering or leaving the premises, to be processed at the gatehouse in accordance with access control procedures, which includes searching, documentation and issue of gate passes or tags, but would frown at security when they are required to comply themselves with these procedures.
Some are very impatient to declare personal assets or effects being taken into the company premises. Also, many feel slighted or embarrassed when their bags or vehicles are stopped for search at the gatehouse. This reluctance is also observed when their close friends or family members are involved in these routine security procedures, even when they are contractors and company vendors, who need proper documentation and clearance. Some company staff shout and yell at security because they consider the security duty as an unnecessary delay.
The refusal to display company identity cards by staff is also another issue to be considered. Some feel reluctant to comply with this directive because they don't see any reason why they should display their identity card when they are already a staff of the company.
The basic instruction of personal and safety security of locking office doors and switching off electrical appliances after close of work to advert theft and the risk of fire outbreak at night caused by high surge of voltage, is often taken lightly as offices are left unlocked and open with air conditioning units, photocopy equipment, desktop computers and laptops left on and, or still connected to the wall sockets.
More appalling is the total disregard and non compliance by some company staff who show a resentful, stiff neck approach to every thing which has to do with security, just because they don't want to be monitored or checked in their activities, because they are bonafide staff of the company and a third party contractor staff (security)they think have no such effontry to do so.
This attitude is evident in restricted areas, where only qualified persons with proper safety attires are authorised to be. But these persons are the first to raise alarm over any incident and blame security for everything.
Regular briefs and seminars for company staff on basic security requirements, including access control procedures are the solutions to this mindset and wrong notion of staff not contributing their quota to security, by not adhering to laid down procedures and co-operating with security, only when it is convenient for them.
Every body needs to play their part, afte rall, security procedures exist for the protection, safety and betterment of all concerned. Nobody hates order.
