Education is a process of giving and receiving systematic instruction and skills especially at a school(institution or university) or an enlightening experience acquired in a formal or informal gathering.
The security industry is not left out in benefiting from this enlightening method of information and transfer of knowledge which is so crucial to the present challenges facing it.
These challenges can be tackled and overcome by training and development programmes in the security industry. Each company should adopt one no matter how small and simple the scale is. It will certainly move it to a new level from where it is, presently, because of the following reasons:
Training offers an educational process where people (the work force) learn new information about their work, relearn and reinforce existing knowledge and skills, and most importantly have time to think and consider what new options are available to help them improve their effectiveness at work.
It also conveys useful and relevant information which helps participants to develop new skills and behaviours which can be transferred back to the work place and put in practice.
Training is an effective means of cross fertilising ideas between different organisational groups and sharing information- which is very vital to the security industry. This makes the industry better equipped to face challenges as they occur.
Training can be in form of refresher courses which prevents "skill fade" in the workforce, debrief after any official assignment or occurrence of an incident, seminars, morning briefs before work starts and other enlightenment programmes.
Training also creates organisational development which helps people in a team, in a department,or an organisation to identify effective strategies for improving performance. There may be an identifiable issue or problem which needs to be addressed;this organisational development process seeks to find the ideas and solutions to tackle it.
The training and development process creates an effective feed back process of sharing information between operatives and management which helps management in making useful decisions for its challenges before they become a problem or even solve one.
Learning and development is the heart and soul of the growth of any establishment for it to survive the changes it faces regularly.
Training enhances the spirit of team work in an organisation and shows all the importance of it- how it can move the organisation forward. Its also shows all the direction they are heading to as a team. When an organisation moves as a unit it can accomplish much.
The security industry has a lot to accomplish considering its current challenges and training/development is just one big step it can take towards this positive direction.
We should start one or seek to improve on the ones we already have in place. As the saying goes "its never too late to make the right decisions"
