Computer hackers accessed personally identifiable information and financial details belonging to around 1,400 University of Virginia workers as part of an email phishing scam, the University announced. An internal investigation determined that the culprits first accessed the stolen records in early November 2014 and continued to pluck private data up through early February 2015.

Recently we discovered a new wave of these attacks, where a number of electricity distribution companies in Ukraine were targeted again following the power outages in December. What’s particularly interesting is that the malware that was used this time is not BlackEnergy, which poses further questions about the perpetrators behind the ongoing operation. The malware is based on a freely-available open-source backdoor – something no one would expect from an alleged state-sponsored malware operator.
LONDON, UK: AppRiver, LLC has released its year-end Global Security Report, a detailed summary and analysis of the malware and spam trends of 2015. In total, AppRiver quarantined 944 million messages containing malware from January to November, and an additional 705 million in December alone, doubling the number of malware messages from 2014. The security vendor also quarantined 26 billion spam messages in its filters.
