Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, the First Sea Lord, and professional head of the Royal Navy, on Wednesday 23 March at the London School of Economics and Political Science gave what can be appropriately regarded as a timely lecture on global security.

Sir Mark discussed the rapid change and uncertainty in the global strategic environment, and how it is bringing up new security challenges. He argued that states need to think afresh about the scope and delivery of their responsibilities for the security and well being of their citizens.

The lecture featured a response from Mary Kaldor, Professor at LSE and co-director of LSE Global Governance. Professor Kaldor has previously worked at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and was a founder member of European Nuclear Disarmament (END), founder and Co-Chair of the Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly, and a member of the International Independent Commission to investigate the Kosovo Crisis. The lecture was chaired by Professor David Held, Graham Wallas Professor of Political Science and co-director, Centre for the Study of Global Governance, LSE.
