General Sir David Richards, Chief of the Defence Staff on December 14th, 2011 in London, delivered the RUSI Annual Lecture where he canvassed economic growth and the pursuit of transatlantic military alliances. Said General Richards, “The country’s main effort must be the economy. No country can defend itself if bankrupt...Alliances not only have the benefit of extending our reach and providing us with allies in times of need, they can also assist with the government’s Prevention strategy.”
Introduction
1. Thank you Lord [John] Hutton for your kind introduction. It is always a pleasure to be here at RUSI and a great honour to be delivering this, the second of my annual CDS lectures in this fabulous place. It hardly seems just over a year ago that I took over from Lord Stirrup. It’s been a busy, challenging but rewarding year.
