Playtech has numerous code analysis solutions in place and is familiar with the capabilities of the solutions in the marketplace. The biggest disadvantage of other tools was the requirement to scan compiled code. Playtech wanted a solution that was capable of running the scans during the development lifecycle in order to achieve a true SDL and none of the other solutions supported that. The ability to easily customize the rule sets to enforce Playtech's security policy was another thing that proved difficult with other solutions and was a non-issue using Checkmarx's open query language.

JFC reaches full operating capability and ready to deliver!

A new military command, Joint Forces Command (JFC) established to improve the way MOD prepares for and conducts operations reached full operating capability yesterday (2 April 13). According to a source at the MoD the significant milestone means that the JFC is now fully-manned and able to fulfil the entire range of its responsibilities in support of Defence’s objectives for current operations, future contingencies and for the longer term.

Lessons learnt from SpamHaus DDoS attack

Vigilance can report that last week, as part of the Spammer-Anti-Spammer wars, an attack on Spamhaus was created using a DNS amplification attack on highly rated DNS servers, the attack used Botnets to send an initial reflection request to the DNS Servers, which then generated the actual traffic. Today, although we are not sure if the same vector of attack was used again, the attack was able to draw enough web traffic to Spamhaus to reach a reported peak of 300Gbps of DDoS – a respectable number indeed. It is clear that proper DNS Server monitoring and configuration should have deflected the attack at an early stage. The DNS Attack vector showed again the effectiveness of using servers as initial attack vectors rather than a user-based botnet.
