Sharp rise in roadside speeding fines raises questions over use
Study calls for revenues to be invested in community projects
New figures reveal a dramatic rise in speeding fines imposed by roadside officers over the past three years as revenues from speed cameras have declined.
The statistics, obtained using Freedom of information legislation, show that from April 1 until December 31 last year, police using speed guns collected £3,130,360 in fixed penalty fines, compared with £2,202,240 in the whole of 2011-12, a rise of 42%. The total for 2013-14 is likely to be considerably higher when revenues from January 1 to March 31 are added.
