Macpherson and Casey: Personal negatives and positives over decades of policing

This is not a dissection of the Casey review which has attracted so much attention and indeed is linked to a similar report by Sir William Macpherson in 1999 when he labelled the Met as intuitionally racist.

I was a serving Met officer in 1999 before retirement in 2011; since then, I’ve stayed close to world of policing. The following are a series of snapshots during my career and the period since then. It’s an accumulation of incidents/issues over several decades which I would have submitted to any sort of review of the Met had I been asked and indeed still would.

The Casey review received approbation from serving and retired officers for its findings in the first section of the report in terms of how the cuts and poor management had led to an organisation which was shambolic. There was some sympathy for the hard pressed ‘front-line.’

UK Commandos land on frozen lake during daring Arctic parachute jump

Royal Marines parachuted onto a frozen lake alongside Dutch counterparts as part of large-scale exercises alongside NATO allies in the Arctic Circle.

The elite Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS) of 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group have been honing their specialist commando skills during intensive allied training involving 20,000 troops in Northern Norway.

The SRS commandos – known as the eyes and ears of the UK’s Commando Force – jumped from a Dutch C-130 Hercules alongside Dutch Marines to mark the 50th anniversary year of the UK and Netherlands Amphibious Force.

The elite force were tasked with ‘attacking positions behind enemy lines’, providing a foothold for NATO troops involved in Exercise Joint Viking.
