Context hacks into Canon IoT Printer to run Doom

Ability to compromise internet-connected devices raises more questions about IoT security

Researchers at Context Information Security have successfully managed to remotely access the web interface on a Canon Pixma printer and modify firmware from the Internet to run the classic 90s computer game Doom. The researchers were also able to use up ink by printing out hundreds of copies and with more sinister implications, could easily have updated the printer with a Trojan image to spy on documents being printed and establish a gateway into the printer’s network.

The tragedy for Edward Snowden is that his efforts have been hijacked by vested interests. It goes without saying that the US and UK governments have tried to deflect interest from the message to the messenger – by labelling him a coward and a traitor, an FSB lackey and someone who has endangered the lives of military and intelligence operatives around the world.

– Why Layering PSIM on Top of Building Management Systems Makes Sense

At 11pm several lights are switched on in an office on the 40th floor of a large tower block. Knowing that the building closed at 8pm, the intelligent building management system, which is being monitored at the front desk, alerts the on duty manager. Should he ignore it, send the on duty maintenance person to switch it off, dispatch a security guard to investigate further, or call the local police? The on duty manager, who is new to his job, isn’t quite sure how to handle the situation. Sending a caretaker along to turn off a light when a potential burglary is taking place could make a bad situation a whole lot worse. So he switches his attention to the video system console to search for the nearest video camera, a process which takes some time given the hundreds of CCTV cameras in the complex.
