London (UK): Countercept by MWR InfoSecurity has been named a finalist in the SC Awards 2016 Europe for outstanding threat solution products in information security. Countercept is recognised in the Best Managed Security Service category, which acknowledges superior products and services that help customers address the most pressing cyber-security threats. Launched in 2015, Countercept delivers a 24/7/365 managed attack detection service, evolved from MWR’s Compromise Assessment and Incident Response services delivered under the CESG-approved Cyber Incident Response Scheme.
Traditional signature or threat-intelligence-based recognition has proved limited as attackers simply make minor adjustments to their attack to subvert detection. Instead, Countercept uses their own EDR software, in conjunction with real-time traffic and event analysis, to detect malicious actions performed by attackers and spot anomalous behaviour that indicates a compromise. This gives Countercept’s analysts the intelligence needed to identify malware and breaches on the network that existing detection solutions would miss.
The team behind Countercept has over a decade of experience simulating attacks against major organisations, cementing a deep understanding of the attacker mindset. Understanding how an attacker operates allows the team to anticipate an attacker’s next move and therefore stay one step ahead.
Adam Bateman, Managing Director at Countercept said "The drive and commitment to our goal in Countercept is pretty astounding.
My colleagues at MWR and I have spent over a decade on the offensive side of security. During countless simulated attacks, being detected has never been an obstacle, even when making very little effort to be stealthy. It was clear to us that the bar needed raising in attack detection and so we set out to do just that.
You can't just rely on technology alone to solve this problem. History has shown us time and time again that technology might work for a short time, but then it will be beaten - that's what attackers do, they break technology.
Our objective was to build something that can adapt quickly, a non-static moving target, based on our understanding of how attackers operate. Essentially having attackers defending networks from other attackers - it really works.
To see the fruits of our labour paying off and having been able to really raise the bar in our client's defences is rewarding to say the least."
