Vigilance can report that Compass is one of six finalists in the Best Multiple Foodservice Operator Award at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2014, alongside others including Sainsbury’s and BHS. Organised by Seafish1, the awards recognised businesses for their food quality, marketing initiatives, training policies and commercial awareness.
According to a source Compass currently serves over 5,500 portions of fish and chips across the UK every week in Tesco cafés. Cod is hand battered on site and cooked to order, while guideline daily amounts (GDA) information is displayed as part of Compass’ Know Your Food programme2 – providing customers with details of the nutritional content of their food. As well as recent innovations to this popular dish, including flavoured batter options such as balsamic vinegar and mild chilli, fresh tartar sauce and lemon are served with each portion while peas have been enhanced with fresh mint. To ensure that standards remain consistently high, Compass and Tesco have also implemented a mystery shopper programme across stores.
Oliver Devine, Head of Marketing for the Instore division of Compass Group UK & Ireland said: “We take pride in providing great quality food and excellent value to our customers in a friendly café environment. This nomination is a fantastic recognition of our offer. We are always looking for ways to improve this popular classic further, ensuring fish and chips remains our hero meal and our customers’ favourite choice.”
Winners of the National Fish and Chip Awards 2014 will be announced during a gala event in London on 22 January 2014.
