The deteriorating political tension and insecurity situation in Rivers State, South South of Nigeria has been quite embarrassing, very disturbing and unpredictable. Lately, the judiciary (two High Courts) in Rivers state were the target of attacks when Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were used for this barbarism. one wonders if this is a calculated attempt to emasculate and intimidate the Judiciary.
Unconfirmed reports also suggests that the office of the Deputy Governor was targeted. Earlier, it was learnt some youths were believed to have been arrested with a cache of arms by the JTF and later set free sequel to "orders from above". Governor Amaechi's camp and the opposition in Rivers State are said to be enmeshed in finger pointing, whilst this ugly scenario impinges negatively on the State's economy and on innocent people.
If the current situation in Rivers State is to be used to mirror the 2015 general elections, then there is serious cause for concern. The unfolding drama in Rivers State must be arrested before it degenerates further. The political class in Rivers State and Nigeria in general must play by the rules. The security agencies must remain neutral and and be fair to all concerned.
Also, they must leave no stone unturned in unravelling and bringing to justice all the masterminds of these heinous crimes no matter their positions in society.
We 'd hasten to warn that innocent lives must not be sacrificed at the altar of political brinkmanship and the selfish aggrandizement of the political class. Additionally, We passionately implore Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used by politicians and other vested interest groups.
What is more, if politicians believe in their cause let them deploy their own children as political thugs. And to quote President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, "Nigeria is bigger than any individual or group of people".
Let us therefore, be reminded that no individual or group of people have a monopoly of violence. Let's be our brother's keeper. Peace is essential for personal and collective advancement.
