Following this morning's news that WhatsApp is much less secure than we all thought due to a secuirty backdoor that allow Facebook to now read our messages (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jan/13/whatsapp-backdoor-allows-snooping-on-encrypted-messages), Lee Munson, security researcher for Comparitech.com comments:
"Back in April of last year there was a palpable feeling of delight among security professionals, and perhaps message senders in nigh on every other walk of life, when WhatsApp announced the introduction of end-to-end encryption.
"The promise of secure communications, via a commonly used and easy to pick up application, was almost too good to be true.
"And now, it seems, it is.
"Perhaps unsurprisingly, following its acquisition by data-hungry Facebook and the passing of the ‘Snooper’s Charter,’ WhatsApp now appears to be far less secure than before.
"Whether that’s a deal breaker for anyone not called Snowden remains to be seen but I, for one, am concerned about the possibility that my private conversations may be viewed either by a large company or, more worryingly, scooped up as part of a WhatsApp-GCHQ agreement, should such a thing exist."
