The Security Council yesterday extended for a third term the mandate of the expert body handling the United Nations sanctions imposed on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for nuclear arms testing.
Vigilance learnt that in the resolution adopted yesterday, the Council also urged all States to provide “any information at their disposal” on the implementation of previous resolutions that imposed sanctions against the country, tightened an arms embargo, and called for tougher inspections of cargo suspected of containing nuclear and ballistic missile equipment.
The 15-member Council created the Panel of Experts in 2009 in a resolution which condemned a nuclear test in the DPRK, which it said was in “violation and flagrant disregard” of Council resolutions. It had also demanded that the DPRK “not conduct any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology.”
Yesterday’s resolution we gathered extended the panel’s mandate until 12 June 2012, and requests a report from the group by November of this year.
