It is no longer news that the Government has been warning that power outages over the winter may be a real threat to businesses and individuals all over the country. The National Grid has warned of lower winter power capacity in the UK, for more information please see link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29794632. As a reaction, Nigel Tozer, Product Marketing Director EMEA, CommVault has written on what businesses need to think about in order to protect their data in the event of a power outage:
"Today’s warning from the National Grid of nationwide winter power outages is something businesses need to take seriously. Not only do companies need to think about the environmental impact of how they manage data and physical and virtual systems, but they also need to consider effective disaster recovery to ensure business continuity in the event of a significant outage.
It’s certainly worth checking with power suppliers to ensure your DR site is on a different part of the power grid from your main DC and if you’re using compute in the cloud, checking their ability to move to auxiliary power. A good DR strategy will cope with a multitude of challenges – blackouts/brownouts being just one – and doing it properly need not be as expensive as people think."
