Responding to the news that Nuclear Regulatory Commission computers were successfully hacked by foreigners over the past three years http://www.nextgov.com/cybersecurity/2014/08/exclusive-nuke-regulator-hacked-suspected-foreign-powers/91643/, Deepen Desai, director of security research for Zscaler says:
"In the cyber era of numerous state-sponsored targeted attacks with the motive of cyber espionage, surveillance, or sabotage, it is not very surprising that Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has been targeted multiple times. NRC is an independent agency of United States government that regulates commercial nuclear reactor plants and other uses of nuclear materials.
"It is extremely concerning that these attacks involving a commonly used technique of spear-phishing e-mails were successful on two occasions in the last three years. The sensitive information maintained by NRC will be of prime interest to some foreign states with the motives ranging from espionage, surveillance, or sabotage. This makes it very important for the organisations like NRC that maintains nation’s critical infrastructure information to not only continuously train their employees but also update their training content more frequently. It is also imperative for such organisations to adopt a stronger security policy."
