Navigil, an original design manufacturer of programmable GNSS tracking devices for intelligent track and trace applications, recently introduced a variety of new-generation geofencing functionalities. With programmable processing capability and multiple sensors embedded in tracking devices, provision of multi-dimensional geofencing features requires little to no back-end server power and wireless data traffic.
“Multi-dimensional geofencing powers the next leap in tracking, both in personal and in business applications,” said Matti Räty, President and CEO, Navigil. “While simple circular geofences already proved highly useful in a variety of monitoring and security applications among others, adding support for complex polygons and additional qualifiers opens up a multitude of new opportunities. Embedded processing coupled with low-power hardware design now enables the interplay of location and sensor data within battery-operated tracking devices.”
Navigil’s flagship tracking device, the Navigil TD230, complements geographic fences with additional dimensions based on time, speed and direction. In-device intelligence enables launching alerts autonomously even without wireless connectivity and functional scripts within the tracking device, based on a single criteria or a combination of several.
“Sensory data is now readily available, but data alone is of little use,” said Aku Salmi, VP Sales and Marketing at Navigil. “Thanks to embedded processing power and programmable firmware of the Navigil TD230, we no longer need to pump out raw data. It’s now easy to design applications that, for example, send out alerts if a certain scheduled trip hasn’t started on time, or if the movement is towards a wrong direction, outside of the desired route, over the allowed speed, or halted for a too long period of time.”
The Navigil TD230 enables the simultaneous use of up to tens of thousands circular geofences or up to 200 complex geofences consisting of joined polygons, paths and circles. Alerts and functional scripts can be configured to launch based on any combination of longitude, latitude, time, speed and direction data. With Navigil’s unique software development kit (SDK), functionalities can be fully customized and over-the-air (OTA) updated to suit a variety of track and trace needs.
Introduced in September 2012, the Navigil TD230 OEM Tracker is a uniquely versatile white-label wireless tracking device. The small and ultra-low power-consuming device is programmable to enable a wide range of track and trace applications including personal safety, fleet management, vehicle black boxes, on-board diagnostics and insurance telematics.
The TD230 can survive long periods of time without external power while it still periodically communicates with a server. The low-power hardware design, intelligent sleep logic and decreased need for wireless data traffic contribute to the TD230’s minimal battery drain of 80 uA at 3.7 V DC. Wakeup from a power saving mode can be triggered by a scheduled event, a mechanical motion or an external input.
